Description
first dose to be administered within first 5 days of cycle or within 5 days following child birth (delay until 6 weeks if breast-feeding), injected into anterior thigh or abdomen, dose only suitable if no hormonal contraceptive use in previous month.
Pros
The Depo injection is over 99% effective when used correctly and consistently, meaning fewer than 1 out of 100 women using it will become pregnant in a year.
It is important to receive the injection on time every 12 weeks for maximum effectiveness. Delays in administering the next dose may reduce effectiveness and increase the risk of pregnancy. If interval between dose is greater than 13 weeks and 7 days (in long-term contraception), rule out pregnancy before next injection.
Cons
- changes in menstrual cycle
- slight weight gain, mood changes
- not recommended if you have low body density/ osteoporosis/ blood clots/ liver disease/cancer.
Missed Pill
If the first injection is within the first 5 days of your menstrual period, it starts working immediately, and no backup contraception is needed. If oustide this window then condoms for first 7 days if having sex.
